Break Fourth

"Break Fourth!" is the blog for City Art Rooms, authored by Young Sun Han, curator/artist. Break Fourth! refers to the convention of using an invisible fourth wall in film and theatre to heighten a viewer’s suspension of disbelief. Acting as a border between reality and fiction, actors are known to “break the fourth wall” when they are conscious of the audience. Similarly, we want City Art Rooms to be aware of our visitors and convey information about our behind-the-scenes activities.

It's been busy!

A whirlwind trip through London, Paris, Brussels, Cologne, and finally Berlin left us with very little time to blog, but look for updates while we get ourselves sorted! In the meantime, please enjoy further images from London, including a few snapshots from the Zoo and Scope art fairs.

First Impressions

It's not a coincidence that I've felt a strong sense of nostalgia trawling through the galleries of London's east end. My last visit to the city was during overseas studies at Goldsmiths, where each weekend, a group of us would highlight our favourite exhibtions in the "artupdate.com/london" guides and take away as much promotional materials the gallery staff would allow us. Many of the prominent east end dealers are still in full swing, including influential Vilma Gold (vilmagold.com) and publically funded Chisenhale Gallery (chisenhale.org.uk) near Victoria Park.

Flying through the air

Welcome readers! Thank you for joining us on this forum , where Director Kylie Sanderson and I hope to share our journey and unravel the process of taking artworks and ideas from New Zealand into the heart of Europe. The first few days of our London leg has us taking in our surroundings while recovering from the time difference. Luckily, our Air New Zealand flights were mighty comfortable as we hurled across barren Chinese deserts to land in the Angelic pub of Islington with several pieces of luggage and large photographs in tow...

Gems from Miami

An update has been long overdue. Since the confiscation of a personal laptop, I have been unable to retrieve my back-up notes and references to the various satellite art fairs that occurred in Miami last year. However, some immediate highlights have not eluded my memory. Here are two of my favourite showings:

Miami Heat, Part I

Last year, the cosmos of the art world alligned and shone a beam of light over the continent of Europe. The Venice Biennale, Art Basel (Switzerland), Dokumenta 12 in Kassel, and the Sculpture Projects Muenster opened in consecutive fashion, spurring a pilgrimage of artists, writers, curators, spectators, and jet-set elite. Also known as the "Grand Tour," these events engage the international art community, serving to highlight new shifts in contemporary art and curatorial practice. Of the three, Art Basel is the most explicit commercial event and has established itself as the most successful art fair in the world.

In the Beginning...

Long-time trawlers of Auckland galleries may find the surrounds of City Art Rooms familiar, yet noticeably different from previous visits to the space. That’s due to passionate gallerists carrying on a 12 year tradition - occupying 28 Lorne St’s first floor and establishing their particular vision of contemporary art. Thousands, if not millions of hammered nails later
